One feature that I always like is the purity and weight on a coin. Panama Balboa's are a great example of a circulating coin telling its true value (note the center right and left notations on the reverse):

made me ponder a bit.

Leaving aside any question of fakes and forgeries, we put a lot of trust in the makers of gold and silver coinage, bars and rounds.

So far as English coins go I put my trust in the Trial of the Pyx, an arcane judicial procedure that has taken place annually since 1282 AD.

Here is a brief description and here is the verdict on the 2006 English coinage.

For jewellery items I rely on Hallmarking and for PM bars I look at the LBMA Good Delivery List of Acceptable Refiners .

For everything else I just hope for the best. :confused_ma:

I bite into them. My favorite ones to bite are the 5-9 maples.

Re: Is it real?

I only buy old classics: sovereigns, double eagles and half eagles, Canadian and Morgan silver dollars, large cents and Canadian and Hong Kong five cents silvers are my favourites. I buy mostly off Ebay and mostly from large reliable coin companies with an Internet presence. Sellers with good and easy communication and easy return policy.

I don't worry too much about graded vs. ungraded coins, "Certificates of Authenticity" or method of encapsulation. Sometimes a good coin EF will cost 40% of the AU or BU price! Can't go wrong if the mintage is low. After you get enough of a certain coin you just know by weight, feel and touch, details and design, colour, thickness and 'ding' sound whether it is the real thing. Avoid sellers with no items for sale, from China, poor (<98.5%) feedback record or who have ridiculous shipping charges and conditions. READ all their negative feedbacks received. ALL OF THEM if the item you are after is expensive.

Other than that, nothing but hope for the best! Just buy top quality if you can afford it.

Only buy what is easily recognized........ or something that you have THROUGHLY RESEARCHED AND PURCHASED FROM A REPUTABLE SOURCE.

That is very good advice, IMO and I suppose I am some way towards achieving it.
